The reaction of kids to technology is a metaphor of what happens to society : to be simplistic, an OS upgrade. What occurs today can be compared to the diffusion of the printing press. In 1450, as the printing press blazed throughout Europe, one fear seized the few who knew how to read : losing their memory. Hefty and expensive books could not be moved around. Reading without memorizing was unconceivable. But with cheap books everywhere, remembering millions of lines had ceased to be relevant. This fear was based on the old context. Memory suddenly ceased to be a competitive edge, to be replaced by more analytical skills and affordable books. Print changed us in more areas. It helped to build nations and made peoples' minds more sequential, analytical, visual. It allowed to develop schools and to mass-product culture and literacy. But the fear of losing memory and the hope of getting rid of glasses prevented many XVth century observers to understand what was actually going on. Sometimes, the same happens today. IT is changing us, but we dislike this idea. We nurture the dream of controlling technology. We buy zillions of touch screens and we hope to remain untouched.
